Dave Campbell’s Football Texas released the Class 5A Division II pre-season Top Ten teams, and for the first time in three years, Ennis didn’t crack the list. This week, when the coveted magazine landed on the desk of The Ennis News, behold, the Lions were at No. 11.

Hall of Fame HC Sam Harrell has a full complement of coaches as the team is a week ahead of the start of the pre-season practices. Like all schools who held spring practices, Ennis will wait a week before beginning on Mon., Aug. 8.

Headlining the kickoff of area preseason football teams is No. 25 Palmer, who break into Dave Campbell’s Football Texas ranking for the first time.

Lady Gladiator Athletics have enjoyed their share of success in recent years, in volleyball, basketball and softball. The run appears to have run its course, at least in terms of a certain group of girls with prowess at multiple sports.

Following an All-District year as an Ennis senior, Mattie Beakley signed with Temple College, then transferred up to NCAA Division II Midwestern State (Wichita Falls). At 5’10, the third baseman battled her way up to earn playing time in seven games this spring.

Uvalde High School football player, Justyn Rendon, was voted by his peers to wear jersey No. 21 this season in honor of the twenty-one lives taken in May by a local shooter.

Former Ennis 2004 state-champion quarterback, Jake Brown, has joined HC Sonny Cumbie’s staff at Louisiana Tech. He will serve as the cooffensive coordinator and wide receivers coach.

Former Ennis standout baseball player, Kyle Keever, who then played four years at McMurray University and was an assistant coach this past year at Ennis, accepted a coaching offer at Class 6A state champion Southlake Carroll.

In just over a week, Ennis volleyball players will take to the court in earnest to prepare for the soon-coming season. HC Kelly Henderson begins her fifth campaign, and will do so with a pair of new varsity assistants in Jordan Southerland and Sierra Mihailov.
