Eight weeks from the start of the 2022 high school football season, and just four or five weeks from the start of practices, there are still eight schools who are still without a head coach according to a report this week from Dave Campbell’s Texas Football.

Over two years ago, Edinburg (Tx) High School football player was penalized three times on one play, ejected and then bull-rushed a blind-sided official, Fred Gracia, 55, slamming him to the turf, is in the news again. Now 20, Emmanuel Duron was arrested after Edinburg police found him sleeping in his vehicle at 5:28 a.m. He was parked on the roadway.

Five weeks from Monday, Aug. 1, Ennis volleyball comes together for the start of fall practices. HC Kelly Henderson will likely field a new-look Lady Lions team following the graduation of three starters from last year’s 13-21 squad.

When Kyla Menefee blows the first whistle on August 1, Ferris volleyball could be in for a real encore season. After producing a 24-10 mark last fall, they return a duo upfront that should help them contend with the likes of the two teams that finished above them, Midlothian Heritage (30-19) and Godley (32-10).

When seen last, Palmer volleyball was wrapping up last season on the rise. The Lady Bulldogs missed the playoffs with a 14-19 record, however, they stunned Eustace, a team that was 22-7 prior to the post-season. The 3-1 victory was positive proof of the direction HC Melanie Barnes has led the Black and Gold.

One of the eight teams in District 5-5A advanced to this weekend’s Texas 7-on-7 State Tournament. Games are taking place at Veterans Park in College Station. There are sixty-two teams in Class 5A and 6A that are in Aggieland, three of them from Ellis County - Midlothian, Red Oak and Midlothian Heritage.

Following the retirement of Hal Wasson, who assembled seasons of 6-4, 4-6 and 7-4 in three years at Corsicana, the school district recently named a new football head coach and last week they secured an athletic director.

Making a big splash to fill their football head coaching vacancy, Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) introduced Greg Ellis as the eighth coach in team history.

A subject placed on the UIL Legislative Council this past week, to ban freshmen from playing varsity sports, was rejected by the UIL Standing Committee on Athletics.
