Athletic Director Don Drake announced on Wednesday, April 20, that former Ennis boys basketball Head Coach, Jerry Mason, has been hired to again “lead our program moving forward.”

After leading District 14-5A for much of the season, the Ennis softball team had a few hiccups in the second half of the league season that spoiled their bid of winning the district title. Now they are gearing up for post-season play with a fresh wind of optimism.

Pushed to the brink of playoff contention, Ennis rebounded from a pair of one-run defeats at the hands of first place Corsicana, 4-3 at home and 3-2 in eleven innings on the road, the Lions found a home-game against winless Waco University on Apr. 19.

Ennis scored early and often with crooked numbers in every inning to pound Waco University, 15-2 on Tuesday. Before the game fans honored three seniors, shortstop Kylie Morton, first baseman Makayla Fuentes and pitcher Aubree Lalani, and a fourth, infielder Adrianna Jasso, who is graduating early.

After taking first place at last week’s District 14-5A meet, senior hurdler Ca’Terrin Cox finished fourth at this week’s Area Meet in the 300 hurdles with a 38.48 time, and was third in the 110 hurdles, clocked at 14.47. Both of them were personal bests, according to Coach Stephen Marrow. Junior thrower, Heath Vernor, was first in the discus at 186’8. It was a personal record.

Ennis football will report for spring camp on Monday, April 18, and continue several days a week before ending with an intra-squad scrimmage slated for May 13.

No. 4 state-ranked Corsicana rallied from behind to nip Ennis, 4-3, on Tuesday night. For the Lions, who fell to 8-11 overall and 3-4 in District 14-5A, it was their fourth one-run setback in league play. They have held opponents to six runs or less in 14-of-19 games, and are feeling the heat to earn a post-season berth. Corsicana, who won their fourth straight one-run decision, are 16-3-1 in all games and 8-1 in district competition.

Ennis wasted a dominating first four innings against Red Oak by squandering a 3-0 lead in what became a disheartening 5-3 defeat.
